Hinterland appears in a Malaysian art gallery this October, as part of the OffStone exhibition showcasing work of journalists and ex-journalists made after-hours or post-career.
Our four latest covers, along with copies of the magazine, feature in a display about our co-editor Yin F Lim’s work with Hinterland and creative non-fiction following a 16-year journalism career in Malaysia (under the byline Lim Yin Foong).
Hinterland appears alongside Yin’s own work: ‘Mother-Daughter Conversation’ is a collage capturing three generations creatively by incorporating one of Yin’s conversations with her mother into the sewing pattern of a quilt her grandmother made. It is inspired by the creative non-fiction of poet Victoria Chang, whose experimental memoir Dear Memory features collages of family photographs and conversations.
OffStone is curated by self-taught artist and former journalist Lim Siang Jin. The exhibition features paintings, photography, pottery and craft such as sewing and crochet, along with the written word. In an Instagram post, Siang Jin notes the common thread that runs through the exhibited works: “Their commitment to communicate, to tell stories in more than just words.”
Siang Jin’s piece - Fear and Hope in COVID Times - was used as the cover art for Hinterland’s Issue 12: Writing the Body special.
