Summer Round-up and Submissions Closing Soon
Hinterland posts you might have missed over the summer, including closing dates for our latest open call.

Editors’ Note
It’s been a busy summer up at Hinterland HQ here in Norwich. We released our 15th issue and celebrated our 5th anniversary (happy birthday to us), and started our new Substack — thank you to everyone who has picked up an issue, liked or shared a post, told a friend about us, or just read one of our posts!
Submissions Open
Just a reminder that our open call for submissions (on the subject of Journeys) closes at the end of next week (13th September). You can read the submission guidelines and submit here.
We are also open for Flash Nonfiction submissions (on any subject, not just journeys) until the end of the month. We define flash as anything between about 250-1500 words. Submit your flash here.
Editorial Recommendations
Iona Macduff, the guest editor for our climate-writing special, shared with us some of her cultural highlights of the summer. Although the main event, Alberta Whittle’s Under the skin of the ocean, the thing urges us up wild, has now finished, you can still read Iona’s thoughts as well as her pick of reading and listening material here.
Co-editor Yin F. Lim also shared some of her recommendations for reading, listening and watching, amongst them Jess Morgan’s solo-play The Starling Hotline. As Yin indicated in her post, Jess would be taking the work in progress on tour in the autumn and the dates/venues have now been announced.
Writing Workshops
July and August saw us publish the first two of our series of writing workshops. The first, from Sarah Passingham, was about ‘Writing with Compassion’. In it, Sarah guides you through a two-part exercise to help you write about painful or traumatic memories. You can read it here.
In our second workshop, Linda Cracknell urges us to pay attention to our surroundings; that is, to immerse yourself in the environment, to really look at and take inspiration from your surroundings.
Author Interviews
Finally, we chatted to four of our authors from Issue 15 — read our quick-fire interviews with Jay Prosser, Electra Rhodes, Sarah Davies and Sarah Clement on our Substack, as they discuss their current obsessions, what they’re writing now and the story behind their pieces in Hinterland.
