Earlier this year, we celebrated our fifth anniversary. You seemed to like the post we did about Issue 1, so we thought we’d continue this look through our back catalogue. Issue 2 was released a little over five years ago, featuring an incredible cover illustration, ‘You are here’ by local artist Richard Horne.
Issue 2 was headlined by author, Richard Beard, who wrote a piece about walking a new pilgrimage trail called the Archangel’s Way. Richard walked the path with his friend Dru Marland, an artist who also illustrated the piece.
One of the things we’ve always prized in Hinterland is publishing experimental pieces, non-fiction stories that perhaps don’t easily fit into one genre or another — we even dedicated a whole issue to it! Issue 2 was no exception, featuring Spencer Darr’s flash piece, ‘The Night’s Content Moderation Watch Oath’, told almost entirely through footnotes, as well as an essay by Antoinette Moses about documentary theatre, accompanied by an extract of a script.
Editors Andrew and Freya interviewed author and academic Bart Van Es, who had recently won the Costa Book of the Year for the phenomenal The Cut-out Girl. The conversation took in such topics as Sebaldian photography, contemporary Dutch politics and the fraught difficulties of writing about family members.
Of course that’s just a small taster of what you can find inside Issue 2: as you can see from the contents page the issue was packed full of fantastic articles, photo essays, and flash non-fiction.
We have limited copies of Issue 2 on sale at our webstore now, or you can order a copy of the digital edition.
