Autumn Round-up
Hinterland posts you might have missed over the past few months - and a note about Christmas delivery dates.
Editors’ Note
Although the Christmas tree is up and the mulled wine and mince pies are in full flow, we’re not quite ready to down tools for the year at Hinterland HQ: we had a great time at the Christmas Publishing Fair here in Norwich — it was great to meet so many of you in person! We’re also hard at work on our next issue, which will be up for pre-order in the not-too-distant future — it’s a “journeys” special and it features some truly amazing writing. Watch this space, as they say.
There’s still time to buy a copy of Hinterland as a gift (for you or a loved one!) and have it delivered before Christmas. You can also purchase a gift subscription — we’ll send out a copy of the current issue (to you to wrap, or direct to the recipient) in time for Christmas along with a gift tag and welcome message. You can read more about last posting dates in the UK here.
Although Autumn (let alone Summer!) seems like a distant memory here in Norwich, Storm Darragh having swept the last of the leaves from the trees, there’s still time to have a little look back at the season’s highlights from our Substack.
Editorial Recommendations
Founding editor Freya Dean shared some of her recent cultural highlights with us, including a wide range of exhibitions and museums she’s enjoyed. Amongst them was the amazing Boijmans Depot in Rotterdam, an art storage facility meets gallery that has to be seen to be believed.
To celebrate East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) Heritage Month in September in the UK, co-editor Yin F. Lim and some of our contributors of ESEA heritage curated a series of cultural recommendations. From books about the British ESEA experience to live albums and cookbooks, there are some great picks here.
Writing Workshops
September and October saw us publish the next two in our series of writing workshops. The first, from Jay Prosser, was about ‘Writing with Objects’. In it, Jay guides you through using an object as a way to write about emotions and memories.
Speaking of memories, in our second workshop of the season Jarred McGinnis laid down a provocation — that memory is very much fallible — and then presented an exercise to explore how we might write about and from memory.
Author Interviews
We chatted to seven of our authors from Issue 15 — read our quick-fire interviews with Rose Kemsley, Julia Martinčič, Kareem Tayyar, Sarah Passingham, Sheena Graham George and Ashley Barker on our Substack, as they discuss their current obsessions, what they’re writing now and the story behind their pieces in Hinterland.
Miscellany
Finally, Hinterland appeared in a Malaysian art gallery back in October, as part of an exhibition curated by our Issue 12 cover artist Lim Siang Jin. You can read all about it here.
